DescriptionThis issue of The Illustrated War News dates to 14 April 1915 and is captioned "A remarkable exclusive photograph: a naval landing-party coming in to Kum Kaleh, at the entrance of the Dardanelles".HistoryOne of the first amphibious operations in modern warfare began in February 1915 when Turkish forts at the entrance to the Dardanelles were bombarded. In March British landing parties were put ashore at Kum Kaleh and Sedd-el-Bahr (Seddul-Bahr) to disable the remaining Turkish guns and clear the way for army brigades to follow.SignificanceThe Gallipoli campaign of World War I is synonymous with the ANZAC landings but there were other naval campaigns including the initial bombardments of Turkish forts and batteries and subsequent landings of naval and marine forces, as well as the submarine campaign in Turkish shipping lanes. These illustrated newspaper reports bring these events to life.
