DescriptionThis jigsaw puzzle was used by Greenpeace to raise funds for their campaign to stop whaling in Australia. The image is by French cartoonist Roger Blachon and depicts a cartoon of people and whales living together in harmony.HistoryGreenpeace was established in 1971 by a small group of activists protesting against nuclear testing in Alaska. Six years later they held their first demonstration in Australia against the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company and were significant players in banning whaling in Australia and New Zealand by generating public awareness of the issue. Greenpeace NSW and Greenpeace Adelaide joined in 1987 to become Greenpeace Australia which has since expanded to become Greenpeace Australia Pacific. Dedication to the protection of the marine environment is still a primary goal of the movement in the region including sustainable fishing and protection of the ocean’s biodiversity. SignificanceThe first action under a Greenpeace banner in Australia was against the last whaling station in the English-speaking world at Albany, Western Australia. This took place on August 28, 1977 at the gates of the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company's processing factory (www.greenpeace.org/australia). The company carried out its final hunt the following year.
