DescriptionA colour slide depicting Hut Point with part of the Transantarctic Mountains in the background.
Handwritten with blue ink on mount reads "Looping across bay to Western Mts with Hut Point in foreground".
This slide is part of a selection of 18 colour transparencies taken by New Zealand scientist Leslie Bowden Quartermain on his expedition to McMurdo Station in 1959.
HistoryLeslie Bowden Quartemain, Antarctic Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, published 'Two Huts in the Antarctic' in 1963 about the history and preservation of huts at Cape Royds (built by Shackleton) and Cape Evans (built by Scott) on Ross Island in the Ross Sea area.
SignificanceAustralia has jurisdiction over about one third of the icy Antarctic continent; telling its stories and contextualising considerations about its future are important responsibilities for the Australian National Maritime Museum.
