DescriptionThis colour postcard features a young boy in a sailor suit with cap tally reading 'HMAS AUSTRALIA'. The boy has a large British bulldog at his feet, and behind him are the flags of the Commonwealth. In the background are two warships, and along the bottom of the postcard is the phrase 'What we have we'll hold'.HistoryWhen war was declared in 1914 there was no hesitation or question that Australia would not fully commit to Britain’s cause. Still seeing herself very much part of the Empire, Australia was keen to prove her loyalty, strength and worth when called on. Patriotism was high and images such as this postcard were enormously popular.SignificanceThis postcard illustrates the defensive stance of the Commonwealth during World War I. The combination of Commonwealth flags emphasises the strength in unity of the imperial family. Patriotic symbols such as bulldogs, lions and national flags were common features on wartime postcards and posters.
