DescriptionA woven necklace made by Mavis Galikali Warrngilna Ganambarr of Elcho Island, Northern Territory. This contemporary necklace by Mavis Galikali Warrngilna Ganambarris shows a transfer of traditional weaving techniques into new forms. This piece is constructed from pandanus and bush string, getting its earthy tones and colours from a natural dyeing process. It was produced for the inaugural AIFW - Australian Indigenous Fashion Week in 2014. Accompanying camisole top is 00054380. HistoryMavis Warrngilna Ganambarr is one of Australia's leading fibre artists. Mavis was taught fibre art by her grandmother at 19 and has spent many years experimenting with creating new styles of weaving and wearable art. Mavis has exhibited across Australia including in 2004 "A Matter of Time", Tamworth 16th Fibre Textile Biennial toured Australia in 2001, the 18th Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. She has also held a solo exhibition Gunga Djama Mirr (Pandanus Work) at the Bandigan Art and Crafts Gallery Sydney, 2001. Her works have been acquired by National Gallery of Victoria and is included in the Kerry Stokes Collection. SignificanceThe traditional techniques and knowledge of weaving being used in a contemporary context bringing them into a new light and allowing the artist the opportunity to translate her traditional techniques onto a new form.
