DescriptionA framed silver gelatin print titled 'Pilots'. The vessel is unidentified and the photograph is part of the John Watt collection.HistoryLittle is known about John Watt who donated his collection of maritime sketches and photographs to the Australian National Maritime Museum in 1992. John had lived in Newcastle, New South Wales for most of his life and his father was a sea captain working in the Australian coastal trade and was responsible for putting most of the comprehensive collection together. It is believed that John was an articles clerk in Newcastle and had church and masonic lodge associations along with being a member of some historical societies, including secretary of the Newcastle Ship Lovers Society in 1954. John was also an Agatha Christie and Dr Who fan. SignificanceThis photograph is part of an extensive collection of approximately 4500 postcard size images belonging to John Watt who was the Secretary of the Newcastle Ship Lovers Society in 1954.
