DescriptionLock of dark brown hair tied with cotton that was wrapped in a handwritten note with two names, Miss Tyrie of Appila and Mr H B Hawke of Hawkesly House, Kapunda, South Australia. If the note relates to the hair then it is a keepsake from Miss Tyrie to either Henry Binney Hawke (1827-1904) or his son Harold Binney Hawke (1878-1963). Henry established a successful foundry and engineering business in Kapunda in 1857, he retired to Port Lincoln in 1884 but returned to Kapunda in 1891 and resided there till his death in 1904. His son Harold was playing billiards with him at the North Kapunda Hotel when he died.HistoryHenry Binney Hawke established a successful foundry and engineering works at Kapunda, South Australia, in 1857, moving his family to there in 1859. He married Christina Rayner in 1852 and after her death in 1866 he married Julia Barkla in 1868. He sold the business in 1884 (which became H.B. Hawke & Company) and retired to Port Lincoln in 1884. He returned to Kapunda in 1891 where he resided till his death in 1904. He was playing billiards with his son Harold at the North Kapunda Hotel when he died. The Hawke on the note could be Henry Binney Hawke (1827-1904) or his son Harold Binney Hawke (1878-1963). If the note relates to the lock of hair within it, the note and hair could date from when Henry was seeking a second wife (1866-1868) or to an early romance of his son Harold. In 1915, on his WWI enlistment papers, Harold Binney Hawke is noted as being married to Rose Sexton (1890-1965) and living in Adelaide. In 1924 he had a daughter with this second wife Clarice Hale (1883-1975).
