DescriptionMade in Australia by Jantzen International in the 1960s, these olive green Bri-nylon swimming trunks feature a high drawstring waist, quarter skirt, and a leg line on the upper thigh. The red diving girl Jantzen trademark is featured on the lower left corner.HistoryBy the 1950s men's swimsuits mirrored women's fashion trends in fabric and detailing. While the actual size and style of men's trunks changed little between the 1930s and 1950s, there was a shift away from natural fibres, such as wool and cotton, to synthetics such as nylon.
Developed during World War II by DuPont, USA, nylon was the first in a series of synthetic fabrics used by swimwear manufacturers. It was quick drying and stretched to hug the figure, providing a more self supporting garment than the heavier woollen trunks of previous decades.SignificanceThese trunks are representative of men's swimwear made in Australia during the 1960s.
