DescriptionFarewell to the troopship BARAMBAH (previously HOBART) at Melbourne. The BARAMBAH is marked `A37' on the bridge signifying that it is a WW1 transport ship. Such vessels were allocated HMAT (His Majesty's Australian Transport) during their requisition for war service.HistoryMelbourne based photographer Josiah Barnes had two sons, Norm and Victor, who left for war in 1916 (both returned to Australia after their service). Barnes appears to have taken an interest around this time in photographing the troopships as they departed for war from Melbourne. The troopship BARAMBAH was built in 1912 and was previously a German ship named HOBART. HOBART was captured when entering Port Philip in 1914 and converted for use as a troopship during WW1. After the war the vessel was transferred to the Commonwealth Government Line in May 1918. The vessel was then purchased by the German company Norddeutscher Lloyd and renamed JUSTIN before being broken up for scrap in Germany in 1935.
