DescriptionA book titled 'Magellan le premier voyage autour du monde par le navire la victoire' by Jean-Paul Alaux and illustrated by woodcut engravings by his cousin Gustave Alaux.
HistoryGustave Alaux created the woodcut illustrations in this book on Magellan's voyage written by his cousin, Jean-Paul Alaux.
Gustave Alaux's work here is exceptional, depicting the blend of fact and fantasy that is Pigafetta's account. Here for example is the tree that like a fountain dispenses golden water, the shipwreck of the Saint-Jacques, the King of Zuba, fireworks, death of Magellan, elephants in Borneo, and the cannibals of Malaya.
In the spirit of the 1920s the book has been beautifully designed, and evokes an image of glamourous armchair travelling. Both Alaux cousins were involved in the maritime field, with Gustave joining the Marine Academy in France in 1946.SignificanceThis edition of Jean-Paul and Gustave Alaux's work perfectly embodies of the artistic style and sentiments of the 1920's. Written in French and illustrated with significant moments of Magellan's journey, both real and imaginary, the book still comes with its original decorated wrapper.Victor Amadee Gressien
