It tells the story of a forbidden love between a Jungarrayi man and a Napngardi woman which ends in them being turned to stone in the rocks at Ngarlu, a long water hole.SignificanceThe print is significant as an example of the work of Samson Martin Japaljarri, a Yuendumu artist whose work has been included in major First Nations exhibitions in Australia, Canada and the United States.The print's provenance to the Michael Kershaw collection further adds to its significance as, in his position as managing director of the Australian Art Network, he has been responsible for the development and promotion of Indigenous art for over 25 years. Through the publication and distribution of fine art prints by First Nations artists, Kershaw has contributed to broader recognition of their work in Australia and internationally.
