DescriptionAustralian Light Horse are depicted riding through Macquarie Street amongst crowds of people. The man saluting on the left is the Governor-General of Australia Sir Ronald Munro Ferguson. Sydney Hospital is visible in the background, upper left. A similar image published in the Sydney newspaper 'Referee' notes that the Light Horse were 'passing the saluting base in the Expeditionary Force route march through Sydney...His Excellency the Governor-General Sir Ronald Munro Ferguson is taking the salute' ('Sport and War', Referee 28 April 1915, p 1). The man far left with the white hair and standing to the side of the Ferguson appears to be Colonel E T Wallack, then Commandant of the 2nd Military District (NSW).SignificanceThe Samuel J Hood photographic collection records an extensive range of maritime activity on Sydney Harbour, including sail and steam ships, crew portraits, crews at work, ship interiors, stevedores loading and unloading cargo, port scenes, pleasure boats and harbourside social activities from the 1890s through to the 1950s. They are also highly competent artistic studies and views - Hood was regarded as an important figure in early Australian photojournalism. Hood’s maritime photographs are one of the most significant collections of such work in Australia.
