DescriptionThis image depicts the departure of the P&O Liner CORFU from West Circular Quay No. 4 wharf in Sydney. The vessel arrived in Australian ports in July 1932, June 1933 and July 1935. It is possible that this image depicts the vessel's inaugural visit to Sydney and its departure at 4pm on 15 July 1932. The ship was requisitioned during World War II as an Armed Merchant Cruiser and troopship. It was scrapped in Japan in 1961.SignificanceThe Samuel J Hood photographic collection records an extensive range of maritime activity on Sydney Harbour, including sail and steam ships, crew portraits, crews at work, ship interiors, stevedores loading and unloading cargo, port scenes, pleasure boats and harbourside social activities from the 1890s through to the 1950s. They are also highly competent artistic studies and views - Hood was regarded as an important figure in early Australian photojournalism. Hood’s maritime photographs are one of the most significant collections of such work in Australia.
