THE PORT JACKSON. SAILS FOR SYDNEY. LONDON, October 8th
The four-masted barque PORT JACKSON began her second ocean-training voyage to
Australia yesTerday under the command of Captain Charles Maitland. She carnes 50
Warspite boys under agreement between the Marine Society and the owners of the PORT JACKSON, besides a number of cadets, including the holders of four nautical
scholarships for the County of London. In nautical circles the hope is entertained that the system of creating scholarships thus started will be developed by county and borough councils throughout the country. The PORT JACKSON will arrive in Sydney at Christmas, staying there five weeks and returning by the way of Cape Horn.
SignificanceThe Samuel J Hood photographic collection records an extensive range of maritime activity on Sydney Harbour, including sail and steam ships, crew portraits, crews at work, ship interiors, stevedores loading and unloading cargo, port scenes, pleasure boats and harbourside social activities from the 1890s through to the 1950s. They are also highly competent artistic studies and views - Hood was regarded as an important figure in early Australian photojournalism. Hood’s maritime photographs are one of the most significant collections of such work in Australia.Samuel J Hood Studio
