DescriptionLithograph by Louis le Breton entitled 'Balienier American Depecant la Baliene, sur le Borne du Bresil' (American whaler skinning the whale, on the Brazil terminal). Black and white print of an American whaling ship with a whale alongside being stripped of blubber.HistoryLouis Le Breton was a French painter who specialised in marine paintings. He had originally served in the navy as a surgeon and then travelled with Dumont d'Urville's expedition to the South Pole and Oceania from 1837 to 1840. From 1845-1847 he was part of an expedition to Madagascar. Le Breton produced tinted lithographs and chromolithographs on naval forces, ships and boats, sea landscapes and ports.SignificanceWhaling and sealing were nation building industries at the end of the C19th. Whalers from Britain and America headed further and further south each year looking for new pods and colonies.
