DescriptionThis engraving featured in the 7th edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica published between 1830 and 1842. The plate features four images which illustrate the vessels used in the construction of breakwaters. Figures 1 and 2 show fore and aft views of a vessel dropping stones from the stern doors. Figure 3 depicts a cross section view of a stone-carrying vessel (showing stones on trolleys along the length). Figure 4 depicts a hoist vessel lifting stones onto a breakwater under construction. This engraving probably featured in the 7th edition ‘Encyclopaedia Britannica: A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and General Literature’ published in 1842.
