DescriptionThis photograph depicts a rowing eight and cox sitting in a rowing shell in Sydney, Australia with Henry Hauenstein as (5). He was also a member of the Australasia Eights crew at the Stockholm Olympics in 1912 (Australia and New Zealand competing as a combined team). For that crew he was also on the 5th oar.HistoryHenry Hauenstein was born on May 3, 1881 in Sydney, New South Wales. Hauenstein was a member of the Leichhardt Rowing Club and was the first eight-oared representative to row in state crews. He competed in state teams in 1907, 1908, 1909, 1910 and 1911; winning in 1908, 1910 and 1911. In 1912 he rowed as (5) in the Men's Coxed Eights crew at the Stockholm Olympics. Australia first sent rowers to The Olympics in 1912. The Australian crew won the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Regatta en route to the Olympics at Stockholm, Sweden. A change of personnel between Henley and Stockholm resulted in the crew losing some form and they missed a medal, whilst the Leander crew, which finished second at Henley, won the gold medal for Great Britain. SignificanceAustralia has a high profile in the history of the Olympic movement as one of only two countries to have attended all modern Games. Watersports have been a particular focus.
