DescriptionPhotograph of an untitled image (May Day banner) by Clem Millward.
Image part of the May Day banner (8' x 6') of charcoal and chalk on calico depicting a baby being held closely.History"When I was working as a wharfie, May Day was the major date on the calendar. The studio was the height of activity for three weeks or a month before May Day. Sonny Glynn and Leon Lewis were the principal workers involved in that. Leon was the signwriter. Sonny did a lot of the illustrative work and when they saw me working up there they invited me to so banners. I suppose I assisted them with the banners. Leon and Sonny were the annual signwriting team. Once or twice, I was also employed by the Seamen's Union for a fortnight to do banners for them. Then I'd go down to the Seamen's Union and work in their basement."
