DescriptionPlate XXXVI from Dumont d'Urville's 'Voyage pittoresque autour du monde'. The plate has two images titled in both French and Spanish. The image at top is titled 'Village a la Baie Jervis / Aldea en la Bahia de Jervis' showing an Aboriginal camp at Jervis Bay. The bottom image is titled 'Entree du Port Jackson / Entrada del Puerto Jackson' showing Sydney Heads. Beneath the images is the inscription 'Pittoresque / Pintoresco' 'Pl XXXVI'.HistoryThese images were recorded during Captain Jules Dumont d'Urville's first southern voyage aboard the ASTROLABE. The three year exploration journey saw the expedition visit Jervis Bay in Novemeber 1826. During the brief visit to Jervis Bay, the sailors on board engaged with the Aboriginal community and the ship's artists - Louis Auguste de Sainson and Francios Edmond Paris - took various sketches of the local landscape, people and artefacts such as spears and canoes.SignificanceThis lithograph provides a visual record of one of the great French exploratory ventures of the nineteenth century (and, incidentally, one of the last). It is very important as a source in both the history of European world exploration and, more specifically, of the European relationship with Australia and its inhabitants.
