DescriptionA submarine escape suit made from orange plastic, single overall style with boots and hood.HistoryThe suit is designed to enable personnel escaping from a submarine to ascend freely and safely from depth and to provide thermal insulation whilst floating on the surface awaiting rescue.
The suit is part of an S.E.I.E (Submarine Escape Immersion Equipment) set that also includes an independent stole assembly that forms part of the suit proper. The stole assembly provides a dedicated air supply and buoyancy during ascent and in addition exhibits the characteristics of a lifejacket when on the surface with the main body of the suit deflated.
When ready on the surface, the suit is inflated by an attached CO2 canister and the wearer takes on the appearance of the 'Michelin Man'. The suit is manufactured from two layers of thermoplastic proofed fabric with a quilted appearance. This provides a high level of protection, flotation and insulation.
SignificanceThe suit is designed to fully enclose the wearer and afford the maximum possible protection during both the ascent and while on the surface awaiting rescue. Kuramoto Instrument Manufacturing Co. Ltd, Tokyo
