DescriptionA coil-woven basket by Debra Wurrkidj made from dyed (various colours) coil-woven pandanus fibre. Bunches of fibre strands are combined to form the foundation which is constituted as the basket progresses and is constantly being added to and forms a continuous spiral from the centre of the base to the rim.

Through her work Debra Wurrkidj retains the traditions and methods of production, including the gathering the fibres for her baskets and wood for carving. In addition to these traditional techniques Debra has been at the forefront of innovation in the Maningrida area in adoption new mediums and designs.SignificanceThis basket is an example of the coiled basketry technique and typifies the way that it has spread and diversified from south-eastern Australia to northern Australian communities, particularly Arnhem Land.
