DescriptionThis engraving by Charles Motram after the painting by John William Hill depicts a water view of New York. Various large and small vessels can be seen in the water, as well as activities on a raft and boat.HistoryEarly in John Hill's career he was a topographical artist employed by the New York State Geological Survey and later he produced many views of American cities for the Smith Brothers and others. He was a member of the National Academy of design. This view shows Manhattan from the East River at approximately location of Brooklyn Heights and the Navy Yard. One of the largest engraved views of the city produced. Based upon a watercolor by John William Hill who specialized in landscapes, cityscapes and well as ornithological and zoological subjects. He would become a leading artist in the American Pre-Raphaelite movement.SignificanceThe port of New York was an active centre of trade and commerce. It was also one of the major ports of departure for the California goldfields.
