DescriptionPrint of a woman dressed as a Navy sailor trailing a model boat behind her by Raphael Kirchner. HistoryRaphael Kirchner was an Austrian artist who came to be associated with postcards depicting women, generally beautiful and often suggestively clad or posed. While his depictions became known as a 'Kirchner Girl' their enormous popularity amongst European and American servicemen sowed the seeds of the pin-up girl culture. Stuck up in trenches, ships and barracks, the postcards served not only as morale but also as a useful form of propaganda for WWI with similar styled women put on recruiting posters.SignificanceRaphael Kirchner is mentioned as the father of the "Pin-up" and his postcards and prints of women were a defintive style of the WWI era.
