DescriptionOfficer's dress belt with gilt buckle marked Royal Australian Naval Reserve (RANR), owned by N W Waterhouse.HistoryNorman 'Warren' Waterhouse was born in Sydney on 12th January 1899 and joined the Royal Australian Naval Reserve in July 1916 and was transferred to the adult forces as a Leading Seaman (Leading Signalman) the following year. Between 1916 and 1955 he was a Lieutenant Commander with the RANR. Waterhouse was promoted to Engineer-Lieutenant Commander in 1935, when he received the Volunteer Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and was transferred to the Retired List in January 1944. His appointment was terminated in July 1955 when he became a permanent resident of the United States.SignificanceThis object symbolises the pomp of naval officers' dress and are an important ceremonial aspect of naval life. It also highlights the role of the naval reserves in the defence forces of Australia.
