DescriptionA black and white image of swimmers and the beach at Shark Bay, Nielsen Park on Sydney Harbour. There is a diving tower in the foreground and on the far shoreline is the 'Kiosk' which was built in 1914. Negative ID number, 3381. HistoryPreviously part of the Wentworth Estate, the area which became Nielsen Park was once owned by William Wentworth. It was disused since 1898 until the New South Wales state government took control of the Vaucluse estate in 1910. Originally known as Vaucluse Park, the area was soon renamed Nielsen Park after the Hon. N.R.W. Nielsen, the Secretary (Minister) for Lands. SignificanceThe Hall photographic collection provides an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour from the 1890s to the 1930s. The collection documents the lively sailing scene in Sydney during this period and features images of vessels ranging from large racing and cruising yachts to the great array of skiffs and the emerging technologies of motorboats. Images of the many spectators and crowds who supported and followed the sailing races are also included in this visual record.
