DescriptionA black and white image of the Nicholson Brothers ferry PROMOTE carrying a large number of passengers. There is a large banner attached to the side reading 'BON MARCHE Ltd "Queen" 1931'. Bon Marche was a well-known Sydney department store at the time celebrating its 56th anniversary that year.HistoryThe NAMBUCCA was built in McMahons Point on Sydney Harbour in 1915. It was used on the Nambucca River to collect milk for the dairy company Norco. By 1925 NAMBUCCA was commissioned by the Navy to run from Balmain to the ship building facilities on Garden Island. Nicholson Brothers purchased the vessel in 1939 and changed her name to PROMOTE. It continued on operating on Sydney Harbour as part of the Stannard Brothers fleet from 1969 - 1973.SignificanceMuch of Sydney's weekend and holiday recreation centred on water activities on the harbour. Whether a sailor or a spectator there were races, picnics and regattas to take part in.
