DescriptionThe theme of sacrifice was a common feature of propaganda posters during World War II. This American poster depicts five sons of the Sullivan family, all lost on board the cruiser JUNEAU on 11 November 1942. Images like this stirred patriotism and motivated people to action.HistoryThe Sullivan's story was a national stirring point in the war campaign. The news that five brothers from one family had all been lost on board the same vessel became widespread and featured in posters, news reels and speeches. In war bond drives it was an effective motivational tool. During World War II posters were easily visible in American libraries, post offices, schools, streets and factories. Some addressed home front efforts, others exhorted workers to greater productivity. Many warned of the dangers of leaking defence information. Some posters targeted school children.SignificanceThis is a good example of how posters could emotionally affect the public. The Sullivan family's loss generated much sympathy and the Navy later ruled brothers could not serve in the same ship or regiment.
