It was printed in the Illustrated London News during the decade of the Australian gold rush. The RED JACKET is shown sailing at sea near icebergs. RED JACKET became famous after its groundbreaking maiden voyage from New York to Liverpool, which it completed in thirteen days, one hour and twenty-five minutes. HistoryDuring the mid-19th century illustrated weekly magazines became increasingly popular in Europe and America. They contained large illustrations and featured articles on topics including politics, war, travel, exploration, fine arts, science and literature. The coverage of the Gold rush and the transportation of passengers to the colonies was a popular story in America, Australia and England, with many people interested in seeking their fortune on the gold diggings. The Illustrated London News was a popular and leading weekly pictorial during the 19th century. It was established in England in 1842 to cover news and current affairs of national and international interest. It was supplemented with large illustrations. The RED JACKET was named after the Native American Seneca chief, Sagoyewatha, known as Red Jacket because he wore a British Army officer's coat. Under Captain Eldridge, the RED JACKET sailed from New York to Liverpool in 13 days, 1 hour, and 25 minutes- a sailing record that stands to the present day. The clipper was later chartered by the White Star Line for service to Melbourne. Under Captain Reid the vessel made the passage in 69 days, 11 hours, and 15 minutes. The vessel was considered the smartest-looking ship in the British merchant fleet and one of the fastest.
