DescriptionThis promotional movie poster was produced for the film 'Beach Blanket Bango'. It features an image of a young couple kneeling on a beach blanket kissing, while a young man carrying a surfboard runs past. The film starred Rene Bond, Tony Mazziotti, Cindy Taylor, Ric Lutz and Nicole Ridell.HistoryDuring the 1950s and 1960s Hollywood developed the beach party movie as a genre. Plots usually centered on teenage gangs that lived around beach. The appeal of surfing in popular culture was in part due to the 1957 publication of Frederick Kohner's novel 'Gidget' and subsequent 'Gidget' films and television series. Following on from the appeal of 'Gidget', American International Pictures produced the surprise hit 'Beach Party' in 1963, helping to popularise surfing and surf music in films.
'Beach Blanket Bango' was a 1975 spoof of the beach party genre and in particular the stars of the American International Pictures beach party films Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. The film was produced by Damon Christian. The storyline revolves around a group of college seniors planning their futures during spring break.
Note: Checked on IMDB in February 2016 and it appears that this was at the time a hard core pornographic film, albeit with relatively high production values, a storyline and large cast and crew, notable for the inclusion of Bill Paxton as Art Director, who later became a TV and movie star.SignificanceThis poster provides a satirical example of the promotional material associated with beach party movies produced during the 1960s.
