DescriptionThis untitled painting, known as 'Sailing, Storm Bay, Tasmania', shows Cape Pillar in the background and is attributed to Haughton Forrest. The date of the painting is unknown but it would have been sometime between 1876 when Forrest arrived in Tasmainia and 1925 when he died in Hobart. HistoryHe specialised in maritime scenes, spectacular landscapes and was prolific in his output. In 1882 he teamed up with photographer John Watt Beattie, copying Beattie's photographs in oil. Forrest rarely travelled whereas Beattie ventured into the rugged areas of the south-west and over to western Tasmania with his camera. Beattie’s photography was a perfect facilitator for Forrest's finely detailed oil paintings and the men enjoyed a productive 38 year business partnership. SignificanceHaughton Forrest is one of Australia's foremost maritime artists, settled in Tasmania in 1876. He painted ambitious oils of Tasmanian shipping, yachting and the local scenery.
