DescriptionAnkle length petticoat belonging to Italian migrant, Lina Cesarin. The petticoat was worn under her wedding dress, she was married in 1956. HistoryThis wedding dress, veil and petticoat belonged to the Italian migrant, Lina Cesarin. When Lina Cesarin farewelled her fiance Rizzieri in 1951, he promised to send for her in five years time. She never doubted that promise. Lina migrated from Italy on the SS NEPTUNIA in 1956 and married three days after her arrival. This treasured wedding dress provides an insight into the time when 'bride ships' were greeted at Australian wharves by crowds of eager husbands and fiancés desperate to be reunited with loved ones.SignificanceThis petticoat reflects the experience and hopes of migrants travelling to Austraia on ships in the post-war era of the 20th century.
