DescriptionSamuel Hordern's yacht BRONZEWING sailing on Sydney Harbour, watercolour by George Frederick Gregory Junior. HistorySamuel Hordern imported BRONZEWING, a lug rigged 2 ½ rater, from the major Scottish yacht designer of the period, G.L. Watson. BRONZEWING had the same sail area and waterline length as the well known and successful BUL BUL but with a straighter stem. The Sydney Mail newspaper mentioned the arrival of BRONZEWING noting it was “not particularly attractive, it is the latest development of the best designers."SignificanceSamuel Hordern was part of the exceptionally well known and successful Hordern family. A long and avid yacht racer, he sailed constantly throughout his life and his vessels were recognizable features in regattas and races on Sydney Harbour.
