DescriptionThis illustration first featured in the three-volume illustrated history of the British Royal Navy titled 'Her Majesty's Navy', published in London between 1890 and 1893, written by Charles Rathbone Low and illustrated by W F Mitchell and W Christian Symons.
HistoryHMS NYMPHE was a Nymphe class composite screw sloop built at Portsmouth Dockyard and launched in May 1888. It had horizontal twin screw, triple expansion engines and was armed with 8 x 5 inch B.L. guns and 8 machine guns.
On 31 December 1906, NYMPHE was reduced to harbour service, renamed WILDFIRE and commissioned for service with the Gunnery School at Sheerness. In 1908 it was the General Depot Ship at Sheerness and served in World War I as a gun vessel.
In 1916 WILDFIRE was renamed GANNET; in 1917 it was renamed PEMBROKE and became an accommodation vessel on the Medway until sold in 1920. The orginal figurehead from HMS NYMPHE is at the St George's Centre at Chatham Historic Dockyard, England.
