DescriptionPostcard titled 'Shipping salt, Edithburg, South Australia'. The Edithburgh jetty was built in 1873 and was used primarily to ship salt, lime and gypsum across Gulf St Vincent to Adelaide.HistoryIt is recorded that between 1891 and 1900 approximately 40,000 tonnes of salt per year was being shipped out of Edithburgh. At one point in its history, it claimed to be the third busiest port in the State, exporting salt throughout Australia and to New Zealand. With 100 salt lakes in the surrounding district, this mineral became the lifeblood of the township but after the Depression of the 1930s business suffered and the industry had ended by 1960.
