DescriptionAn engraving from the Illustrated Sydney News and New South Wales Agriculturist & Grazier titled 'The Fashions' showing swimwear, page 5.HistoryThe Illustrated Sydney News was the monthly illustrated paper for the colony of Sydney, published between 1864 and 1894.
In 1888 the Illustrated Sydney News became the first Australian paper to reporduce a photograph using the new half-tone process. Within eight years all of the illustrated papers had folded, being surpassed by the weekly publications which could now afford to contain images.SignificanceThis engraving depicts the emergence of women's beachwear fashions worn in Australia in the late 19th century, contrasted next to the swimmer are women wearing the highly restrictive and ornate fashion that was popular at the time.
