DescriptionA handwritten testimonial to the good work of William Edward Young MD given by the crew and migrants on the passenger WINDSOR CASTLE. The testimonial is headed 'Ship WINDSOR CASTLE' at top center and 'Moreton Bay Queensland' at upper right of the first page. The manuscript testimonial reads 'We the undersigned have great pleasure in acknowledging the obligations we owe to William Edwards Young Esq. M.D. in consideration of the uniform kindness we have received at his hands and the praiseworthy manner in which he has discharged his onerous duties as surgeon superintendent during the prosperous voyage ... from London to Brisbane'. 326 signatures follow starting with the Surgeon Assisistant, the School Master, several Constables, the Assistant Purser and the Baker's Mate. There are eight pages in all.HistoryThe WINDSOR ISLAND was built by William Pile in Sunderland, England. It began its service for Richard Green in 1857 as a passenger / cargo ship for the England to Australia route, particularly Queensland. The ship was wrecked off Algoa Bay in 1884. SignificanceDr Young was the surgeon aboard a number of immigrant ships in the 1870s and 1880s from England to Australia. Testimonials and supporting government documents help in telling the story of the importance of health and medicine aboard the large number of immigrant ships and early auxiliary steamers in the late 19th century.
