DescriptionMagazine titled 'People', dated 25 January, 1956. Vol. 6 No. 24.HistorySungravure Pty. Ltd was owned by Associated Newspapers Ltd until 1953/54, when it was taken over by Fairfax as its colour publishing division. The division published Pix magazine as well as other iconic Australian magazines such as Women's Day and People, and later Cosmopolitan and Dolly. The printing plant was closed in the 1970s as litho offset printing overtook rotogravure. Sungravure also printed and distributed comics for many other Australian publishers. [http://www.ausreprints.com/content/main/?publisher=394] People magazine started in the in the 1950sas a 'newsy' magazine which featured lifestyle stories and 'quirky' stories. It developed into a forerunner of the "mens magazines" of today with bikini clad women on the covers.SignificanceMagazines such as this illustrate the aspirations of beach culture that existed in Australia at the time. The carefree, frolicking nature of the models, usually wearing swim wear, became a popular cover theme for this particular magazine.
