DescriptionThe wharves and Broken Hill Associated smelters at Port Pirie, South AustraliaHistoryAlthough a small smelting works had been operating at Port Pirie since 1889, it was not until 1915 that the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty Ltd (BHAS) was established at the site. BHAS was jointly owned by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company and North Broken Hill. See 'Encyclopedia of Australian Science' online. SignificanceBHAS became the biggest lead smelter in the world by 1934 processing lead and zinc ore from Broken Hill.
