DescriptionThe tugboat ROLLICKER painted by John Allcot in 1923.HistoryThe tugboat ROLLICKER was built in 1919 by Ferguson Shipbuilders, Port Glasgow. It was very powerful tug, when it arrived in Sydney in 1922 the Sydney Morning Herald stated 'compared with tugs to which Sydney has been accustomed, the ROLLICKER with her two funnels and length of 175ft is a decided step forward. ROLLICKER is to undergo an overhaul in Sydney this week preparatory to being placed in commission' (Sydney Morning Herald, Monday 18 December 1922). I was owned by J&A Brown of Newcastle, New South Wales, until sold to the Nigerian Government in 1925. SignificanceThe ROLLICKER represented a new type of tug on her arrival in Newcastle in 1923, one of the strongest yet seen and certainly the largest privately owned tug in Australia. Too large as it turned out for Newcastle Harbour and she was sold to Nigeria in 1925.
