DescriptionA black and white photograph by Graeme Andres depicting the hydroplane racing power boat TABOO. The vessel here is at high speed and completely out of the water, about to re-enter water bow first. On the reverse is a handwritten inscription reading 'Bruce Grey's Taboo on the way out, early 1970. Bruce was critically injured. 'HistoryThe inboard engine hydroplane TABOO is depicted here racing on Hen and Chicken Bay, near Sydney. The boat is heading north at high speed, perhaps in excess of 100 km/h. TABOO has bounced clear of the surface of the water with the bow now lower than the rest of the boat and is about to 'dig in' under the surface. This position will end-for-end 'flip' the boat. TABOO was badly damaged and Bruce Grey, the driver, suffered a broken back but eventually recovered.SignificanceThis image is part of the Graeme Andrews Collection. Andrews is an Honorary Life member of Sydney Heritage Fleet who photographed Australian shipping at his workplace and elsewhere for more than 50 years. He collected photographs and “sea-pix” from other sources, such as private snapshots going back more than 100 years.
Graeme Andrews also wrote extensively about the powerboat scene in Sydney - including documenting many of the races that took place each weekend along its waterways.
