DescriptionA deck plan showing the decks A to E of the MS AORANGI, owned by the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand but operated its subsidiary the Canadian Australasian Line.HistoryMV AORANGI was built in 1924 for the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand for the Vancouver to Sydney route and operated by its subsidiary company the Canadian - Australasian Line. It acted as a troopship in WWII, transporting around 36,000 troops and airmen and evacuated some 5,500 refugees from war zones. Crew on board also treated countless medical cases and services other craft and ships. It had a huge and a varied role during the war.
After the war MV AORANGI resumed her Vancouver - Auckland route. It was broken up in 1953.SignificanceThe MV AORANGI played an important role as a link from Australia to North America and was a hard-working ship during WWII, instrumental in evacuations of both civilians and later, prisoners of war.
