DescriptionA section of an iron mooring cable or chain secured to a large sandstone block which was dug up on the site of Fort Macquarie, a19th century defensive construction on Bennalong Point, Sydney.HistoryFort Macqurie was designed by colonial architect Francis Greenway under orders of General Macquarie. It was begun in December 1817 with Governor Macquarie laying the foundation-stone.
It was demolished in 1903 to become a tram depot which again was demolished in 1958 to become the Sydney Opera House.SignificanceFort Macquarie was a significant structure on the Sydney foreshore during the 19th century. In addition to being a defensive building, it was also part of the busy maritime industry and works in the area at the time.
