DescriptionThese 22 photographs and transparencies relate to the Federated Shipwrights and Constructors' Association. They feature images of the vessels VICTORIA TIDE, GRETEL and DAME PATTIE, photographs of groups of men attending various meetings, images of men receiving an award and images of childrens games including running races and tug-of-war. The photographs are thought to have been taken during the 1960s and 1970s.HistoryThe Federated Shipwrights and Ship Constructors’ Association of Australia was initially registered in January 1916 as the Federated Shipwrights of Australia. It was made up of members who specialized in ship repair and construction. Later that year it changed its name to the Federated Shipwrights’ Ship Constructors’ & Boat Builders’ Association of Australia and then again to the Federated Shipwrights Ship Constructors Naval Architects Ships Draughtsmen and Boat Builders of Australia by the end of 1917. In 1933 the union changed its name again to the Federated Shipwrights’ & Ship Constructors’ Assocation of Australia. In 1976 the union merged with the Amalgamated Metal Workers’ Union to form the Amalgamated Metal Workers’ & Shipwrights’ Union.
