DescriptionThis archive series numbered [001] - [307] consists of 35mm transparencies taken by Australian journalist Bruce Stannard relating to the 1987 America's Cup in Fremantle, Western Australia.
The transparencies depict the vessels STARS AND STRIPES, AUSTRALIA II, COURAGEOUS IV, AUSTRALIA III, SWAN LAGER, FRENCH KISS and KOOKABURRA III, along with various harbour scenes, the inside of a large auditorium, illustrations and aerial views of yachts under sail, vessels in transit, wharf scenes, yacht skippers Iain Murray and Dennis Conner, and other crew and spectators.HistoryIn 1848 Queen Victoria instigated the creation of a golden cup, known as the 'One Hundred Guinea Cup' to be awarded for a yacht race. The competition would be open to all nations. In the inaugural race on 22 August 1851 the United States built schooner AMERICA challenged 16 British vessels and was victorious in the 85 kilometre race around the Isle of Wight. The competition is still in operation today and one of the most respected and prestigious sailing competitions to be held in the world.SignificanceJournalist, author and photographer Bruce Stannard's material is significant in documenting the reporting of the AUSTRALIA II challenge for the America's Cup and showing the protagonists, participants, and yachts from the successful 1983 campaign, and other yachting events.
