DescriptionA black and white white photograph of machinery titled "Machinery room. Bingera Sugar Mills b21'. Bingera Sugar Mills, located west of Bundaberg in Queensland, was established in 1885 and is still operating today as part of Bunderberg Sugar. HistoryNot long after this image was taken, in 1927 the Bingera Mill was recorded as crushing 42 tons of cane per hour and had crushed 120,000 in one season. During the crushing season the factory worked three shifts, all day and night. About 50% of the cane supplies are drawn over Government railway line, and the balance is carried on the Company's own railway lines, which were about 80 miles in extent. - Burnett and Isles Pictorial, 1927.SignificanceThis image is a part of the Captain Robert McKilliam collection. Captain McKilliam worked for the Aberdeen White Star Line for 32 years and sailed aboard such famous clipper ships as SALAMIS and THERMOPYLAE. He moved to Sydney in 1913 where he served as Assistant Wharf Master on Darling Island.
