DescriptionA woven skirt made by Rosemary Gamajun Mamuniny of Elcho Island, Northern Territory. The skirt is straight in style and constructed with bush strings with feather detailing along one edge. The back is open with strings to be tied up. Made of pandanus bush string, feathers and nautral dyes. It was produced for the inaugural AIFW - Australian Indigenous Fashion Week in 2014.HistoryRosemary Mamuniny is an exceptional fibre artist. She learnt the art of fibre work as a young woman from her mother, Leti Dhamarrandji, her mother, Dhananydjil, and her father Gaykupa Gurruwiwi. Mamuniny has exhibited extensively thoughout Australia including 'Art on a string', which toured Australia in 2002/2003 and "Banumbirr Elcho Island' and 'Bandigan Morning Star Collection Maritime Museum', Sydney and museum Victoria, Melbourne.SignificanceThe traditional techniques and knowledge of weaving being used in a contemporary context bringing them into a new light and allowing the artist the opportunity to translate her traditional techniques onto a new form.
