James E ButtersworthAmerican, 1817 - 1894

James Buttersworth was an established 19th century marine artist. He was born in England but migrated to America around 1845. He is known to have worked alongside the printing firm of Nathaniel Currier, later Currier & Ives. Many of his ship portraits were printed as lithographs during their collaboration. Buttersworth lived in New Jersey and is known for his depictions of vessels in New York Harbour.
