BiographyThe International Refugee Organisation (IRO) was established in April 1946 as a specialised United Nations (UN) agency dedicated to assisting and protecting displaced people and refugees. On 21 July 1947 the Australian Government signed an agreement with the Preparatory Commission of the International Refugee Organisation to accept European refugees and displaced persons. IRO closed its operations on 31 January 1952 and after a liquidation period, went out of existence on 30 September 1953, its responsibilities taken over by other agencies.
