Fred Leist

BiographyFred Leist was a painter, illustrator and teacher. He began as a black and white artist, contributing to the Sydney Bulletin, Sydney Mail and the London Graphic. He was appointed as a war artist in France and after World War I painted two large murals for the Australian Pavilion at the Wembly exhibition, which resulted in commissions for work in Florida and tours in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

On his return to Australia in 1926 he was appointed head teacher of painting at East Sydney Technical College. His paintings were hung in the Royal Academy exhibitions in London in 1911 and 1925. His works are held at the Australian National Gallery, Queensland Art Gallery, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australian War Memorial, and the Bendigo, Mornington and Newcastle Regional Galleries.
