BiographyMichael Lane (1740-1794) was master's mate and assistant surveyor to James Cook, Surveyor in Newfoundland from 1763 to 1767. Lane joined Cook in 1767 and took over the GRENVILLE from him in 1768, when Cook was chosen to lead the ENDEAVOUR expedition. The Newfoundland surveys were published jointly in their names. Lane was a member of Richard Pickersgill's unsuccessful expedition in HMS LYON to the the Northwest Passage from the east in 1776. He became a lieutenant in 1777.
